Create your own unique meditation room design. It is your peaceful sanctuary. You will increase the benefits of your meditation by being in your own sacred space. |
Many people like to include specially-designated rooms for meditation in their homes. If you are lucky enough to have one, you have a wonderful opportunity to create your own design.
If you can’t devote a room just for sacred contemplation, you can easily use part of a room for your practice.
You choose – will you meditate facing east, facing a window, or maybe in a quiet corner?
Your room design will be as unique as you are. You can create a sacred space for yourself that you will look forward to visiting every day.
Your home meditation room decor will be unique, also. Listed below are some things you may want to include.

Whether or not you are going to use a low altar for meditation, you may want to sit on the floor with a mat or meditation pillow. Traditional meditation poses include sitting cross-legged, so you will want to be comfortably relaxed while sitting for several minutes at a time.
Meditation pillows and mats are not fluffy like bed pillows. The mats provide a cushion, and allow you to release tension without feeling uncomfortable sitting on the floor.
Traditional pillows raise the hips slightly so that you can remain cross-legged for a longer period of time without discomfort.

A certain type of shaped pillow called a zafu is traditionally used with a flat mat called a zabuton in Zen meditation practice. |

If you are not comfortable or able to sit on the floor, it is perfectly fine to sit upright in a chair. Natural materials are favored, such as a rattan meditation chair, or natural wood.
You can even meditate effectively lying down, so you may decide to include a simple futon or mat in your meditation room design.
The idea is to be comfortable, but not so comfortable that you lose focus and fall asleep.

Many beautiful meditation benches are available. Click the picture to read about a natural wood bench. Sitting on a low bench allows your back to relax so you can stay peaceful longer. |

Meditation Room Decor |
Candles, flowers and other objects are traditionally used in creating a meditation room design.
Flowers provide beauty for the eyes and also lovely scents for the nose.
Candles provide ambiance, fragrance and a flame upon which to focus your attention to still your mind.

Some people like to burn incense during their meditations. Or you may prefer a smokeless scent like what you enjoy from a diffuser. Click the photos to see examples. |

Feel free to include other beautiful objects that you enjoy, such as a bowl – which you can fill with water if you want – crystals or other natural stones, prayer beads and so on. A small table-top water fountain provides a lovely ambiance and gentle sound. |

Deities |

Many meditators like to include statues, pictures or other representations of deities in their home meditation room design. These can be of holy men and women, ascended masters, angels, saints and so on.
Other inspiring art works such as mandalas and sacred geometries or scenes from nature are also frequently used to focus the mind and generate a feeling of peace and beauty.
Create your meditation room design to suit your taste – whatever fills you with peace and appreciation can be included. Whatever symbols you are drawn to are appropriate.
Even if you don’t have an entire room to devote to a meditation room design, you can create a simple home altar using the elements I’ve listed. A simple table, whether short or tall, works perfectly.
I made an altar using an old rectangular coffee table. Covered with a tapestry or runner, a table can become a beautiful place for your devotional practice. Place a few beautiful objects there, light a candle, have your meditation chair or meditation pillow in place, and you’re ready to go.
Lighting is another factor to consider in your space. You will probably want low light, so a small-wattage light bulb in a lamp will work. Or, you can use a dimmer switch for infinitely-adjustable light choices. Or, simply use candles.
Make your meditation room design personal, make it simple and beautiful and make it peaceful. You’ll enjoy your meditation in your own sacred space.
