Meditation is a very ancient practice.
Its goal is to reunite your mind with its Source.
Meditation is any technique or practice that serves to quiet your usually-busy mind and allow greater peace of mind, harmony, wisdom and sense of unity to be realized. It is spiritual because of its goal - to unite you with the spirit within.
There are many forms – see Types of Meditations.

You can meditate in accordance with various rules or systems, or using certain words as meditation mantras. Here is a definition of 'mantra'.
Some systems and teachers include very specific practices - like breathing techniques, postures, rituals, and length of time - in order to achieve maximum results.
In contrast, there are many activities that you can practice that I call informal or alternative meditation.
These techniques may not involve any specific poses, traditional mantras or mandated length of time. However, they can be very effective in achieving good results by quieting the usually-busy mind.
These informal techniques include walking meditation, simple contemplation and guided meditations.
Many people find that nature is a perfect place for their contemplation practice.
